Can-I-get-Braces-As-An-Adult-1200x675.jpg

March 26, 2022 DentSmileUncategorized

Every person wants a smile that’s bright, healthy, and most importantly, straight. Now, many adults may have thought they escaped getting braces by making it through their teen years without having to get metal brackets stuck to their teeth, but they’re not in the clear yet! There are a variety of reasons why adults may require getting braces, and if you are thinking about this option, it’s essential that you know you’re not alone!

“Am I too old?” is a question our dental clinic in Park City, IL, hears frequently. Finding the best option for ones’ smile is critical, no matter how old or young the patient is. Having issues with the alignment of your teeth has a huge impact on self-esteem; however other problems often outway those of cosmetic concern. Do you have improperly positioned teeth and think it might be time for braces but are worried that you are too old for them? Don’t worry; keep reading because the specialists at our renowned dental center have the answers you have been looking for!

The Benefits of Getting Fitted with Braces as An Adult

Many adult patients have the same common concern; they don’t think that wearing metal in their mouth is worth that hassle, even if they do help straighten the teeth. Getting the proper treatment is essential, and sometimes wearing brackets for a little while is one of the easiest options. Unknown to many, there are a variety of benefits that adult patients will enjoy after a short braces treatment. Many of the reasons people over the age of 25 are investing in braces include:

  • Cost-effectiveness: Major dental work forces patients to break the bank, and it’s understandable why they want to avoid it at all costs. Braces are an affordable option for a cleaner and straighter smile for adult patients, alongside your insurance and our incredible dental payment plans.
  • Short-term: Have you noticed that your teeth are taking away from your overall appearance and need a solution right away? Due to the advancements in orthodontic therapies, patients no longer have to wear braces for several years and instead have a short-term therapy plan for better teeth.
  • Boosted self-esteem: The moment your teeth align and straighten into place, our specialists guarantee that you will look and feel more like yourself, being more confident to show off those pearly whites.

These are just a few of the seemingly endless benefits adults will enjoy when choosing this particular dental treatment in Park City, IL, with Beautiful Smiles Dental Center. Our therapists are ready to discuss all of the advantages and disadvantages with you, ensuring that you make the most informed decision for your dental fitness.

Witness Major Improvements in Your Overall Health

One of the common misconceptions patients have over the entire field of medicine is when one part of the body is negatively affected, it only affects that particular spot. Dental health is an example of the connectivity that each body part has to the other! Teeth alignment especially plays an essential role in the overall health of the body, and straighter teeth are guaranteed to improve a patient’s life drastically. Here are a few ways how:

  1. Closing major gaps in the teeth or spreading them out when they are overcrowded allows patients to breathe and eat easier. This directly helps the heart, blood flow, and nutrition in a patient’s body.
  2. Poor oral health caused by crooked or misaligned teeth will lead to the build-up of plaque and harmful bacteria. This is even more harmful to older patients as this bacteria will enter the bloodstream and has the potential of causing cardiovascular disease and heart attacks. Braces will allow for easier cleaning of the teeth, dramatically reducing the risk of plaque and bacteria build-up.
  3. Higher risk of tooth loss and fractures are also caused by misaligned and overcrowded teeth. This will directly affect chewing, breathing, and self-esteem. Additionally, patients will have to pay lots of money for tooth transplants or dentures.

After patients go through an effective braces treatment, they will find that many of their previous dental conditions have gone away. While it’s not the most attractive or comfortable option, it is worth the time and money, especially when the main reason is to improve the overall health.

Getting Braces Doesn’t Mean Having Them For Years

Traditionally, the moment a child or teen had braces put on meant years of an altered appearance, saying goodbye to their favorite foods, constant trips to the dental clinic, and so much more. However, with the constant changes and advancements in Orthodontics, a long treatment isn’t necessarily the answer. Beautiful Smiles Dental Center specialists use the latest appliances, technology, and techniques to straighten teeth quicker than ever before. Brace therapy and the materials used have been engineered and upgraded to apply more force for a short period of time instead of a small amount over an extended period of time like before. Get the results and modifications you need quickly with our #1 dental clinic in Park City, IL.

Traditional Metal Braces Are No Longer The Only Option

Yes, you read that right! Metal brackets are no longer the only choice that patients have for a healthier smile. At Beautiful Smiles Dental Center, our mission is to provide plenty of treatments for our patients, giving them total control! Invisalign is a new and innovative therapy that consists of clear aligners to straighten misaligned and overcrowded teeth. Clear braces work the same way as traditional metal brackets with one big difference; they blend so well with the teeth that you and others will hardly notice they are there. Other advantages include:

  • Being removable
  • No longer having to avoid certain foods & drinks
  • Easier teeth and gum cleanings
  • Less harmful
  • Blending well with patients’ busy lifestyle

During your primary consultation with your dental expert at Beautiful Smiles Dental Center, ask about the benefits of Invisalign and how it will improve your smile without taking away from your complexion.

The Answer: Are Metal Braces or Clear Aligners Appropriate for Adults?

Now, the answer that you have been waiting for! Are metal brackets or clear aligners for adults? YES! No matter the age of the patient, should our dental professional determine whether or not you are a candidate for braces or aligners, you will be able to enjoy the full benefits of them. However, the only way you will know for sure is during a scheduled consultation with our clinic.

ClearCorrect-Vs.-Invisalign-Clear-Aligners-1200x675.jpg

(How to Make the Most Informed Decision When it Comes to Clear Aligners)

It wasn’t very long ago that a patient’s only option for a straighter and healthier smile was the uncomfortable, unwanted metal brackets. There was nothing a patient dreaded more than hearing that they needed braces. Not only are they irritating and awkward to wear, but they also restrict patients from enjoying food, drinks, and activities that they love. Now, through the advances of dental technology and the strive to allow for more comfort and options for dental patients, you can now get the straight smile you desire with aligners that don’t appear or feel like they are there.

While Invisalign has quickly made a name for itself as the #1 clear aligner for all ages of patients, they are no longer the only option for a discreet and comfortable smile. ClearCorrect is another leading option that has straightened the smiles of thousands of Americans. Now, choosing between the two is a difficult decision without the facts, and that is where the experts at Beautiful Smiles Dental Center come in to assist patients living in Park City, IL, and the surrounding Chicagoland area.

Beautiful Smiles Dental: Helping Dental Patients Make the Best and Most Informed Orthodontic Decisions

Our dental clinic is locally owned and operated, and we genuinely care about the healthy smiles of all of our patients. We take the time needed to create a personal plan for children, teens, and adults, ensuring that they have all the information they need to make a decision based on the health of their smile and budget. At Beautiful Smiles Dental Center in Gurnee, our experienced dentists, and dental team supply Invisalign as an orthodontic solution to improve misalignment and an alternative to metal brackets.

Keep reading to learn about the differences and similarities between ClearConnect and Invasilin so you can determine which is best for you.

Invisalign Clear Aligners – Leading Orthodontic Advancement

Gurnee (Park City, IL) Invisalign Clear Aligners - Leading Orthodontic Advancements

Invisalign clear aligners are the leading advancement in dentistry for teeth straightening. They present the same results as traditional braces without the hassle. This new treatment option is more bearable and boasts significantly fewer restrictions during daily life. Each aligner is properly fitted to the patient’s mouth for absolute comfort and can be removed whenever need be.

Their lack of visibility and ability to be removed allow for patients to get an improved smile without giving up the things that they love. As a leading dental clinic in the Chicagoland area and a provider of Invisalign Braces, our team of dental professionals have experience fitting patients and helping them stay on the right track towards a gorgeous smile without complications.

What is ClearCorrect?

ClearCorrect clear aligners are made out of hardened clear plastic. These aligners undoubtedly straighten teeth, making them an ideal alternative to braces for many patients. These clear aligners offer three distinct options:

  • A set of six aligners (For mildly crooked teeth)
  • A set of 12 aligners (For moderately crooked teeth)
  • An unlimited number of aligners (For severely crooked teeth)

The treatment plan and time period for ClearCorrect depend on the severity of the patient’s malocclusion. During your initial consultation, your dentist will determine the number of aligners you require to fix and shape your new smile.

Differences Between ClearCorrect and Invisalign Aligners

When it comes to clear aligners, it may seem that they are all the same thing, but each of these products has small differences that set them apart and play a huge role in the way you go about improving your teeth.

  1. Invisalign boasts different options to accommodate the severity of the condition, age, and price range. These include:
  • Invisalign Full – A comprehensive package focusing on treating the entire mouth.
  • Invisalign Express 5, Invisalign i7, Invisalign Express 10 – This is a more affordable option for spacing and crowding problems.
  • Invisalign Teen – This package is suited specifically for teens and allows them to avoid the days of metal brackets.
  • Invisalign Lite – This is designed to correct less severe conditions between six to eight months.
  1. Invisalign aligners are thicker and more flexible than ClearCorrect aligners. Through their unique design, Invisalign trays only cover the teeth and not the gums to reduce rubbing and provide a more relaxed fit.

3. ClearCorrect may present faster results in some cases, but patients find them uncomfortable due to how firm and inflexible they are.

Similarities Between ClearCorrect and Invisalign Aligners

  1. They are both FDA-approved and made from plastic that is BPA-Free.
  2. Both aligners use the same technology to move teeth into a healthy position correcting:
  • Overbite
  • Crowding
  • Spacing
  • Underbite
  • Deep Bite

3. Invisalign and ClearCorrect are both excellent clear options for patients who want to avoid unattractive metal braces.

4. Patients boasting either of these treatments achieve incredible results while others barely notice that they have them on.

5. They both can be removed while eating, participating in activities, and brushing teeth/flossing.

Time-to-Brush-Up-Oral-Health-Best-Practices-for-Healthier-Teeth-Gums-1200x675.jpg

When it comes to your smile, good oral hygiene is essential to keep your teeth shining and your gums happy. A proper routine involves tasks such as brushing twice every day, flossing and having regular dental checkups. But, your oral health plays a bigger role, and it is more than cavities and gum disease. Dental professionals have discovered that there is a direct association between one’s dental health and overall health.

Without treatment, tooth decay and issues with your gums will lead to pain, diminished self-confidence, and tooth loss. These challenges have the potential of resulting in speech problems, challenges at work, and malnutrition. Luckily, people can prevent these problems with proper dental care. At Beautiful Smiles, we are determined to keep your smile healthy, and that is why we have prepared the following practices for healthier teeth and gums!

Make Sure to Take Care When You Brush Every Day

Oral Health Best Practices for Healthier Teeth & Gums in Gurnee (Park City, IL)

Dentists around the world recommend that people should be twice their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Though it is one of the most crucial practices for removing leftover bacteria and plaque, brushing is only fully effective when using the right technique.

Did you know that the American Dental Association recommends using a toothbrush that has soft bristles and changing it every three months to ensure that it is effective against the battle between unwanted bacteria!

You should brush teeth using small circular motions, ensuring that you reach the front, top, and back of each tooth. You should take at least 2-3 minutes while brushing and avoid back and forth motions. When you brush too hard or use a hard bristles toothbrush, you will damage the tooth enamel alongside the gums. You will know to switch up your routine and toothbrush when you start to experience tooth sensitivity. Make sure to ask your dentist about the best toothbrushes to use so that you avoid permanent damage to the enamel on the teeth.

Floss Once a Day to Avoid Emergency Visits to your Local Gurnee Dental Clinic

Emergency Visits Gurnee (Park City, IL) Dentists

Throughout the day, as you consume different foods and beverages, bacteria and debris collect on and between the teeth. While brushing gets rid of most of the debris, flossing is a necessary practice for getting rid of the plaque that a toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing also helps with keeping your breath pleasant. We recommend flossing before going to sleep to remove all of the plaque collected from the day. Make sure to gently push the floss between the teeth and slide it up and down. Do not rub it against the gums, as you can risk cutting them.

Make Regular Dental Visits – (Gurnee)

Regular Dental Visits in Gurnee & Park City IL

We know that visits to the dentist’s arent everyone’s favorite thing to do, but they are absolutely critical. The more times we at Beautiful Smiles can see your beautiful smile, the better, but we recommend coming back at least every six months for a checkup. During your visit to our clinic in Park City, IL, we will closely examine your teeth and gums while cleaning the teeth and removing any hardened tartar and annoying plaque. Also, we will do a check for any signs of cavities, oral health issues, gum disease, etc. Depending on the condition of your teeth, some other steps may be necessary.

Even if you have a strong dental routine and are at low risk of developing any problems, we still recommend that you pay a visit every six months. We just want to make sure that you do not have any problems that you may not see at first glance. Plaque and bacteria can be hiding and require the help of a dental professional to be removed. We at Beautiful Smiles treat all patients in Gurnee, IL, with the best dental care in the area. Treating all ages from infants to adults, we are not a regular boring dental clinic. Make sure to talk with us before you leave about when to check-in and come back for another appointment. Don’t wait for emergency situations to arise regarding your teeth, get ahead of dental problems with Beautiful Smiles!

Avoid Smoking at all Costs for Better Overall & Oral Health

Oral Health Best Dental Practices Park City IL

Kicking the habit will not only do wonders for your overall health, but it will help your oral health drastically. Smoking diminishes the body’s immune system, which also makes it difficult for tissue in the mouth to heal. As per the CDC, smoking is a risk factor for gum disease and will prevent the body from helping defend teeth and gums from harmful bacteria, tartar, and plaque. As an added reason to stop, smoking also leads to yellow teeth and horrible breath.

Talk To Your Local Dentist about Choosing the Best Mouthwash for You

Mouthwash is by no means a substitute for flossing and brushing, but it can enhance your oral health greatly. Now, before you go to the local store and purchase any old mouthwash, consult your dentist. At Beautiful Smiles, we welcomw all questions regarding your healthy teeth and gums. So, consult with us on which mouthwashes are the best and which ones to avoid at all costs. Ensure fresh breath doesn’t come with consequences by consulting your local dentist in Gurnee and Park City, IL.

Avoid Excessively Consuming Food with Loads of Starch and Sugar

We are sure that you hear this all the time, but it is true! Consuming high amounts of sugar will lead to cavities. While you may be thinking about avoiding candy and sweets, many different processed foods also contain added sugar. When buying food or drinks, take an extra second to ensure that what you are purchasing doesn’t have huge amounts of sugar. Crackers, bread, pasta, chips, and other foods with high amounts of starch can also cause tooth decay. These foods can easily hide in the mouth until they break down into sugars, providing a feast for bacteria.

Top Foods to Avoid this Holiday Season - Gurnee IL Dental Blog

It’s that time of the year again where joy is spread and good times show through love, passion, and kindness. But with those special moments comes family meals and trays of baked goods, and though it is a time of celebration, it is easy to let your oral health slip a bit. That is why we have created a “Naughty” list for holiday foods that may harm your teeth or gums.

Having dental problems during the holiday season? Don’t worry; Beautiful Smiles Dental Center is available when you need us most! Contact us now.

Candy Canes

are candy canes bad for your teeth?

As given within the name, an excessive amount of candy can have a serious effect on teeth, especially in children. Candy canes are entirely sugar, and though they may seem like an easy festive snack to share and eat, the consequences can be devastating when you go in for your check-up in the new year.

Why should you avoid candy canes this holiday season? Because the high amount of sugar allows bacteria to feed on them, eroding your tooth enamel, leading to cavities and excruciating tooth pain. We recommend thinking twice before buying bags and bags of them to eat, but hey, they still do make for great Christmas tree decorations!

Caramel

caramel apples can harm your teeth

Caramel is delicious and can be a staple ingredient for baking and eating, but like candy canes, their high sugar content is dangerous. Unlike other candies, caramel can easily get stuck between the teeth. This can attack the enamel and cause progressive tooth decay.

Eggnog

eggnog harmful to teeth

We all know that milk is rich in calcium and can help the development and health of teeth, but a common misconception is that eggnog is like holiday milk. Don’t be fooled; eggnog is loaded with sugar and dairy products that coat your teeth, and if not for intensive cleaning, will stay there and continue to erode them.

Do you like to mix your eggnog with alcohol? Though a delicious treat for parties and gatherings, it is a gateway to bacteria growth. So, we recommend holding off on having too many rum and eggnogs and searching for an alternative drink.

Oranges

oranges high acidity

Mandarin and clementine oranges are the typical fruits of the holidays. They are sweet and refreshing, and though they are not as bad as other baked goods and candies, you don’t want to eat too many of them.

Oranges are highly acidic and pose a risk to the enamel in your teeth. So, we aren’t saying to avoid them completely; just make sure that you are limiting how much you have.

Sugar Cookies

sugar cookies can be harmful to your teeth or gums

We understand making cookies is a fun family activity, but you should steer clear of sugar cookies. Its name speaks for itself; all of that sugar will accelerate tooth decay and could prevent you from enjoying that delicious Christmas supper you have been waiting all year for.

Healthy Holiday Foods and Treats to Enjoy

top foods harm teeth gums

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and with that comes food. We know that you want to continue snacking and indulging in delicious treats, so we also wanted to make a small list of holiday foods that are good for your teeth:

Peppermint

You can’t have Christmas without the savory peppermint flavor. Instead of sugar-filled candy canes, substitute them for a rich peppermint tea and other sugar-free peppermint patties and fudge. With thousands of fun and exciting recipes online, we guarantee you will find the perfect sugar-free peppermint alternatives for your goodies.

Gingerbread

Need a substitute for sugar cookies and other sugar-filled treats? Well, gingerbread tends to have less sugar, and you can create so many different things with it. From houses to cookies, the world is your oyster, and by baking it yourself, you can be in control and limit the amount of sugar that goes into it!

Cheese

Do you love cheese? If yes, it’s a really good thing. A study by the Academy of General Dentistry shows that by eating cheese, you raise the pH in your mouth which helps fight back to prevent tooth decay. The high levels of protein and calcium are just an added bonus. So if you want a delicious snack, break out the cheese balls and platters.

Almonds

Roasted nuts are another common holiday snack, and though almonds are not usually associated with this season, we recommend bringing them into your routine. Almonds are:

  • High in protein and calcium
  • Vegan
  • Tasty
  • Low in artificial sugars

Veggies

Well, of course, we had to add veggies. Celery and carrots are easy snacks to layout, and as an added bonus, they are nature’s toothbrush. Not only are they perfect snacks when you are on the go, but they will also remove plaque and fill you with vitamins and nutrients at the same time.

Turkey

During your Christmas dinner, do not shy away from the turkey. The meat is lean and full of protein and phosphorous, incredible for strengthening your teeth.

Do you have a favorite healthy holiday snack? Make sure to share it in the comments so that others can enjoy your creations!

invisalign vs braces

Worn by millions of adults and children across America, metal braces are the traditional option to straighten teeth. Invisalign clear aligners are a much more recent advancement and offer a whole new approach to teeth straightening treatment. If you’re looking to improve the appearance of crowded or crooked teeth, close gaps between your teeth, or correct an over or under bite, then you may be wondering: is modern better than traditional or is the classic solution the best option?

Let’s take a look at the pros & cons of metal braces vs Invisalign clear aligners, to determine the best solution for improving your smile and dental health.

Traditional Metal Braces: The Pros & Cons

Metal braces were one of the very first types of appliance used for treating misaligned teeth. Braces are comprised of brackets, ligatures (rubber bands), and arch wires; the wires are adjusted regularly to maintain pressure on the teeth and gradually realign them.

The Pros of Metal Braces

  • Good for Complicated Cases – Metal braces are suitable for virtually any treatment, no matter how complicated the case is.
  • Better Results  – As metal braces offer a high level of control over alignment and exert more force, it can be easier to achieve great results. It’s often possible to achieve perfect results with traditional braces.
  • Faster Results – In most cases, metal braces work much faster than Invisalign and there’s no risk that a lack of discipline will slow down the treatment.
  • Durable – Traditional metal braces are very strong, durable, and sturdy.
  • Affordable – Metal braces are one of the most affordable options for correcting misaligned teeth.
  • Customizable – There are many color options for the brackets and ligatures on traditional braces, which can make them more appealing to children.

The Cons of Metal Braces

  • Very Noticeable – Metal braces are not as big as they once were, but they can still be quite noticeable when eating and speaking. Many people dislike the appearance of traditional braces.
  • Oral Hygiene Difficulties – It can take time and practice to learn how to brush and floss your teeth while wearing braces, making it difficult to care for your teeth initially.
  • Hard to Maintain – Traditional metal braces need to be cleaned regularly to maintain the braces and keep your teeth healthy.
  • Less Food & Drink Freedom – Crunchy, chewy, hard, and sticky foods can get stuck in braces and damage them.
  • Discomfort – At first, braces can be difficult to adjust to and may cause discomfort and pain.
  • Regular Dental Appointments – When wearing metal braces, you need to SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT with a Gurnee orthodontist for adjustments every four to eight weeks.

Invisalign Clear Aligners: The Pros & Cons

Invisalign clear aligners have been around for roughly two decades. Invisalign treatment involves using a series of custom-made trays that gradually move teeth into the correct position.

The Pros of Invisalign Clear Aligners

The Pros of Invisalign Clear Aligners

  • Each Aligner is Customized – Every tray that you’ll require throughout your treatment will be custom-made from thermoplastic material to fit your teeth.
  • Virtually Invisible – Unlike metal braces, Invisalign clear aligners are almost completely invisible.
  • Removable – You can remove Invisalign clear aligners for between two and four hours every day. The aligners should be removed when eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.
  • Comfortable – As there are no sharp parts, Invisalign clear aligners are normally much more comfortable to wear than metal braces. There are also no dietary changes required when wearing Invisalign aligners, as the aligners are removed when eating.
  • Quicker Consultations – Depending on your Invisalign dentist in Gurnee, IL, you may only need to book an appointment every six to ten weeks. While this timeframe is similar to braces, the appointments are often much quicker.
  • Low Maintenance – Invisalign aligners are replaced on a frequent basis and can easily be removed for cleaning, so maintenance is normally quite simple.

The Cons of Invisalign Clear Aligners

  • Not Always Invisible – While the aligners are clear, if you need additional attachments to assist with alignment, they can become more noticeable.
  • Inconvenient – Removing Invisalign clear aligners can be very inconvenient. The aligners have to be removed when consuming anything except water and you must brush your teeth before replacing them.
  • Chance of Failure – The ability to remove the aligners can cause treatment to be unsuccessful or take much longer. Patients who remove their aligners for more than the recommended two to four hours a day may not achieve their desired results.
  • Not Suitable for Complicated Problems – Invisalign clear aligners aren’t as effective as metal braces. For complicated cases, they aren’t always the best treatment.
  • Initial Discomfort – Just like with metal braces, wearing Invisalign clear aligners can be uncomfortable and slightly painful initially. It can take time to grow accustomed to how the aligners feel.
  • Expensive – Invisalign aligners can be more expensive than traditional metal braces, especially if you’ll also require braces to finalize the position of your teeth after Invisalign treatment.

Which is Best: Traditional Metal Braces or Invisalign Clear Aligners?

Invisalign clear aligners and traditional metal braces are both great options for straightening teeth, but each option does have a number of drawbacks as well as positives. When it comes to choosing the best option for a patient, a lot can depend on their needs and lifestyle and the extent of correction required.

For more complicated cases and with patients who might struggle with discipline, traditional metal braces are often a better choice. For patients who are concerned about appearance, who don’t want to change their eating habits, and who don’t have the time for long visits to the dentist, Invisalign can be the best option.

Visiting an orthodontist or Invisalign dentist in Gurnee, IL is the best course of action if you’re debating Invisalign clear aligners vs traditional metal braces and which treatment is the perfect match for your goals, lifestyle, and level of discipline.

Ways to Ensure Your Child’s Teeth Develop Correctly

Making healthy choices for your child is part and parcel of being a parent, but when it comes to looking after their teeth there’s far more to it than just brushing daily. Your baby’s teeth begin to develop as buds while still in the womb and you can give them an early boost by ensuring that they receive a good supply of vitamins and minerals.

After they’re born there’s even more to contemplate as decisions which will affect the development of your child’s teeth begin very early in their life. At Beautiful Smiles Family Dentistry in Gurnee, IL we can help you to ensure your son or daughter’s teeth develop correctly throughout their childhood. Nothing replaces a regular check-up but our comprehensive guide will provide some useful hints and tips about what you can do at home.

Infant Oral Health

Your little one may not have many teeth at this stage but that doesn’t mean you can’t start caring for them. Creating a healthy environment for the teeth to erupt prevents early decay and its easier than you might think.

Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, clean cloth or piece of gauze after feeding to help remove sugars and bacteria from their mouth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends regular intake of high-sugar foods and drinks should be avoided wherever possible, and that if you’re formula-feeding, your baby does not go to bed with a bottle.

As soon as the teeth come through, which is typically between 4-10 months old, you can start using a soft-bristled brush and water to keep them clean. There’s no need to start using toothpaste until your child reaches two years of age.

Baby’s teeth are surprisingly strong and you will find that they like to chew on anything available to help them through teething. Monitor any teething toys very closely to prevent damage to the gums or teeth on sharp or lacerated edges.

It’s a good idea to start bringing your youngster to the Beautiful Smiles Dental Center as soon as their teeth have started coming through. This allows us to check that everything looks OK and it also acclimatizes your youngster to having their teeth checked. Most parents bring their babies in from around 18 months but we’re more than happy to see them earlier if you’ve got any concerns

Dental Care for Toddlers & Young Children

At this stage in your child’s life, some factors will go on to have a big influence on the future development of their teeth.

Brushing their teeth twice a day is important, and you can begin to use a child-friendly toothpaste that’s been designed for use in young children. Many youngsters like to develop a degree of independence but it’s essential for you to continue overseeing their brushing. You’ll need to check their teeth and maybe even go over some areas yourself to make sure that their teeth are properly cleaned. This may make your child a little grumpy but brushing is an important step to get right.

By instilling a rigorous dental care routine at a young age, you will give your child’s teeth the very best chance of developing properly and of staying in good condition. Flossing should be introduced as soon as your child’s teeth fit closely together; this can be any time from age 2. You’ll need to help your child floss as it’s a tricky skill for small fingers to manage; most children can floss themselves from the age of 10 years.

Potential Problems During the Early Years

Some parents use pacifiers with their child to help to soothe them, while other babies manage well without. A lot depends on whether the child needs to satisfy their sucking reflect in order to settle and calm. Even if you don’t use a pacifier, some children suck their thumbs for comfort.

Research suggests that if your child uses a pacifier or sucks their thumb beyond age 2, it can cause crooked or protruding teeth. It’s therefore a good idea to try and help your child find alternative ways to soothe and manage stress. Rewards and positive reinforcement can be excellent strategies to try.

If your child develops teeth which are crooked or stick out, orthodontics will be required later on to straighten them. Your child may look really cute sucking their thumb but the impact it can have on the development of their teeth means this is one habit your child would be better without.

Oral Health for Children Aged 6 years +

The healthy dental routine that you created when your child was younger will be useful as they continue to develop their own self-care skills. It will be particularly vital as their adult teeth start to come through.

Continuing to attend for regular checkups at the Beautiful Smiles Dental Center every six months will be particularly important at this stage. This will allow your dentist to monitor the growth of the adult teeth and identify any problems with position or placement. Early intervention can prevent much more extensive orthodontic treatment at a later stage so dental checks should never be skipped.

Eating a healthy diet during childhood is important for many reasons, including to protect your teeth. Having a good supply of calcium in the diet will help to strengthen teeth and bones; you can find this in milk products including yogurts and cheese. If your child can’t have dairy, broccoli, oranges, soybeans, kale and almonds are all good sources.

High-sugar snacks should be minimized, especially foods such as chewy candy. This can stick into the gaps in the teeth and erode the enamel. Citrus drinks can present a problem too. They may sound healthy but the high sugar content can cause damage to developing teeth. It’s far better to choose water or milk for hydration.

It’s not just the foods which are obviously high in sugars that you should avoid. Simple carbohydrates derived from white flour such as chips, white bread and pasta break down into sugars and stick to the teeth. Switch to wholewheat options and try to pick snacks which have greater nutritional value, such as an apple.
