Can-Gum-Disease-Be-Cured-at-Home-1200x675.png

Gum disease can be cured at home, but it depends on the stage.

Early gum disease (gingivitis) can often be reversed with good daily brushing and flossing. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can’t be cured at home, but a dentist can treat it and help you keep it under control for the long term.

Below, we’ll show you which stage you may be in, the best at-home methods for gum disease, and when it’s time to see a dentist.

Gum Disease Stages

Gum Disease Stages: When Home Care Works and When It Doesn’t

Gingivitis is the only stage you can reverse at home.

Once it reaches periodontitis, the bone around your teeth starts to break down, resulting in damage that can’t be reversed. Only slowed and managed with professional care.

Stage What you notice Can home care reverse it? Who fixes it
Gingivitis Red, puffy gums that bleed when you brush or floss Often, yes You, after a professional cleaning
Early periodontitis Bad breath that won’t go away, gums starting to pull back No, but it can be controlled Your dentist
Advanced periodontitis Loose teeth, teeth that look longer, pus near the gums No Your dentist, sometimes with a specialist

Most people land between two rows. Sore gums usually point to gingivitis. Gums that look like they’re pulling back are a sign the problem has moved deeper.

If you’re in the second or third row, you’re far from alone. The CDC estimates that about 4 in 10 adults over 30 have some form of periodontitis.

Best Methods To Treat Gingivitis At Home

Gingivitis Home Care: Best Methods

Brushing gently twice a day and cleaning between your teeth once a day is what reverses gingivitis. It isn’t complicated, but it only works if you commit to doing so every day.

  • Brush at the gumline. Angle a soft brush toward your gums and use small circles for two minutes. Brushing harder doesn’t clean better, and it can irritate the very gums you’re trying to calm down.
  • Clean between your teeth daily. Floss or small interdental brushes both work, and research suggests cleaning between your teeth on top of brushing may reduce gingivitis more than brushing alone.
  • Give it a couple of weeks. Many people see less bleeding within one to two weeks of steady care. If your gums look no better by then, home care isn’t the whole answer.

Does Mouthwash Help?

Salt-water rinses, mouthwash, and oil pulling can leave your mouth feeling fresher, but they don’t remove the plaque stuck at the gumline.

A professional cleaning is often the best approach if you want to start from a clean slate. Think of it like a reset to boost home remedies for treating gingivitis a lot faster. It also removes the tartar you can’t.

Full disclosure: no home routine can bring back gum tissue that has already pulled away from the tooth. If bleeding is your main worry, our post on bleeding gums when you brush covers the first steps in more detail.

Why Home Remedies Can’t Treat Periodontitis: Tartar and Deep Pockets

Brushing removes soft plaque. Plaque left too long hardens into tartar, and only a dental professional can remove it.

When tartar builds up below the gumline, it sits in pockets your brush and floss can’t reach. Those pockets are the real culprit. At Beautiful Smiles Dental Center, we measure those pockets in millimeters:

  • 1 to 3 mm: healthy gums.
  • Deeper than 4 mm: possible periodontitis, worth a closer look.
  • Deeper than 5 mm: too deep for routine brushing and flossing to clean well.

Gum problems are often painless in the early and middle stages, so the pain you’re waiting for may not show up until the damage is significant.

Signs You Need To See A Dentist Beautiful Smiles Dental Center

Signs You Need To See A Dentist Immediately

Book an exam if your gums still bleed after one to two weeks of careful care. The signs below also suggest the problem sits below the gumline.

  • Bleeding that keeps coming back
  • Pus, or a bad taste near the gums
  • Teeth that feel loose or have shifted
  • Bad breath that won’t go away, even after brushing
  • Gums pulling back, or teeth that look longer than they used to

Maybe a hygienist said “your gums are bleeding” at your last cleaning, or someone mentioned your breath. Maybe you’ve put off a checkup for a while. Neither scenario means it’s too late, and losing teeth or ending up with dentures isn’t where this has to go. Starting right now still gives you more to work with than waiting another six months.

Gum Disease Treatment At Beautiful Smiles Dental Center

During a gum health exam, we measure your pockets with a small probe and use X-rays to check the bone. If your pockets are deep, the usual treatment is scaling and root planing: a deep cleaning below the gumline.

A typical visit at our clinic typically looks like:

  1. Exam and probing. Dr. Galvez checks your gums and measures the pockets around each tooth.
  2. X-rays. These tell us whether bone around the teeth has been lost.
  3. Deep cleaning, if you need it. Scaling and root planing removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline, and Dr. Galvez can numb the area so you stay comfortable.
  4. Maintenance. You’ll return on the schedule according to your treatment plan, so the gums stay stable.

If your gums need more than a deep cleaning, we’ll tell you, including when a specialist is the better fit.

Many of our patients have also asked: “Will it come back?” and the best answer is: Periodontitis is managed, not cured. Treatment can heal your gums and hold things steady, but your daily care and regular checkups are what keep them that way.
